What are “client specific” usage keys?

For 95% of our customers, these are irrelevant and should not be used.

QuantityWare usage keys are issued based on:

  • SAP installation number
  • SAP SID
  • BCS product (e.g. BCP and / or  BCG)
  • an expiry date

Such keys are applied to an SAP Oil, Gas, and Energy (SAP OG&E) system with BCS installed and allow the usage of the specific BCS product in all clients within the SID.

When completing a Test Usage Key Request form (previously known as Test License Request Form), in the section “Target Systems” you have the ability to select  “Restrict key to specific Client(s)”.  You will receive a warning if you select this option as it should only be used if you are working with multiple business units in one system who use different clients and specific business units will not use QuantityWare functionality in their specific SAP client.

I think we need an example with a theoretical organization…

One corporation has three different business units operating in one SAP system. Each business unit has it’s own specific client within the system. The business units are:

  • Exploration and Production (E&P) (Client 100)
  • Downstream (Client 200)
  • Chemicals (Client 300)

E&P and Downstream want to test QuantityWare and are considering productive usage. Chemicals is not sure and wants to wait and see what happens.  Thus, E&P and Downstream request client specific test usage keys  for clients 100 & 200. This keeps Chemicals in client 300 contractually “safe” as they can’t then use the QuantityWare functionality for business calculations in their client.

At any time after Chemicals wonders why they waited so long and decides to license the BCS product. The company can request standard keys with no client restriction via a support portal ticket – this would then remove the client restriction in the system.
